Storm Rains Down on Spartans

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (March 19, 2009) - Lake Erie College served as generous hosts Thursday afternoon, showering visiting Case Western Reserve University with a multitude of gifts by way of runs, as the Storm defeated the Spartans, 22-1 in its first home game of the season which was called after the top of the sixth inning due to weather conditions. Lake Erie scored a season-high number of runs in just five turns at bat, while also recording a season-high of 18 RBIs - all on 14 hits. Sophomore left fielder Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) led the team with a 3-for-3 performance that included a double, three runs, four RBIs, a stolen base and a walk. Freshman second baseman Kyle Kemp (Spotsylvania, Va./James Monroe) totaled three RBIs and freshman third baseman Patrick Stantial (West Farmington, Ohio/Southington) and freshman shortstop Ryan Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst) scored four runs apiece.

The Storm answered Case Western Reserve's lone run in the top of the first with three of its own in the bottom half of the inning - all on one hit. The Storm did even more damage the following inning, plating seven runs on four hits, including singles by sophomore center fielder Dan Dowdell (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville), Stantial, James and senior Harry Konrad (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).

Lake Erie took somewhat of a scoring break in the third inning, recording just two runs, and then went on to a nine-run, four-hit fourth inning in which CWRU committed two errors, walked four and put another Storm hitter on base with a hit by pitch.

The green and white took its final turn at bat in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one run on two hits - a single by freshman Dave Schaefer (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and an RBI double by Kemp.

Junior Vince Hug (Eastlake, Ohio/North) earned the win in relief, going three and two thirds innings, striking out two. For the game, Lake Erie allowed just one hit.
