PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Coming off a wild 52-49 loss on Homecoming, the Lake Erie College football team will look to move back over the .500 mark on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Apprentice Field.  The Storm is also looking for its third straight road win.
 Lake Erie had its two-game winning streak snapped as its comeback bid fell short against Ohio Dominican last week, 52-49, despite a record offensive day.  Trailing by 22 in the second half, the Storm mounted another fourth quarter comeback but came up three points short. The Apprentice School, meanwhile, was defeated at Salisbury Univeristy - Lake Erie's Week Eight opponent - by a score of 77-7.

THE SERIES: This is the second meeting between the two schools. Lake Erie won the first meeting last year in Painesville, 48-37, rallying from a 32-13 deficit midway through the third quarter.    

THE BROADCAST: The game will be carried live on ESPN 970 (WFUN) and streamed online at www.espn970wfun.com as part of the Lake Erie Football Network with Craig Deas (play-by-play) calling the action.  

THE COACHES: Mark McNellie (Baldwin-Wallace '88) is in his third season at Lake Erie, guiding the program since its inception as a club sport in 2007.  He has a varsity record of 6-11 and is 13-13 overall (including club season). Prior to being named head coach at Lake Erie on Aug. 9, 2006, McNellie was an assistant coach at Mercyhurst College for 17 years.
 Michael Vite (Hillsdale '81) is in his second season as the head coach of the Apprentice School and has a career mark of 3-11. His coaching career has included stops as an assistant at Guilford College, Morgan State, Murray State, Southern and Wake Forest.   
 

LAST TIME OUT FOR LAKE ERIE: A record offensive day and another furious fourth-quarter comeback wasn't enough as the Storm fell to Ohio Dominican 52-49 Saturday on Homecoming at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.  Lake Erie totaled 667 yards in the game, 337 through the air and 330 on the ground.  Sophomore QB Sean Bedevelsky (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) completed 24-0f-40 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns (two interceptions) and ran for a career-high 85 yards and another score to lead the Storm.  Lake Erie trailed at one point 42-20 in the third quarter and nearly pulled off the comeback win by outscoring ODU 15-3 in the fourth.  Tony Howard (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights/Kent State) rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown while Demetrius Gray (Cleveland, Ohio/South) added 68 yards and two TDs.  Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) led the receiving corps with five grabs for 95 yards and a touchdown.  However, Ohio Dominican matched the Storm's offensive explosion with 591 yards on offense led by Billy Griffin's 386 passing yards and three TDs.  Gus Armbruster (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) had 14 tackles for the LEC defense.          

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE APPRENTICE SCHOOL: The Builders trailed 35-0 at halftime and 49-0 before getting on the scoreboard in a 77-7 loss at Salisbury on Saturday.  AS surrendered 460 yards rushing against the Sea Gulls and 606 total.  Reggie George rushed for 116 yards on 13 carries for the Builders while Phil Caralla completed 11-of-21 passes for 153 yards.  James Abbs caught five of those passes for 88 yards.  

THE LAST MEETING: In a wild west type shootout, the homestanding Lake Erie Storm had one more weapon in its matchup with the Apprentice School on October 11, 2008.
 Builder junior quarterback Phil Caralla threw for a school record 388 yards and five touchdowns, but it was not enough as the Apprentice School gave up 27 unanswered points in the second half and fell 47-38 to Lake Erie College at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
 A slow first quarter saw the Storm started scoring on its first drive covering 62 yards capped by a Dave Romeo two-yard run at the 12:45 mark to take a 7-0 lead.  That lead held through the quarter as both teams stiffened on defense, which turned to be one of the last defensive stands of the game.
 Apprentice School answered with a scoring drive on its first series of the second quarter.  The Builders went 80 yards, converting two big fourth down plays before scoring on a 32-yard completion from Caralla to freshman Jusdon McKee.  On that score, the 6-foot-4 freshman out jumped the defender at the 10-yardline before scooting into the end zone at the 8:07 mark.  Earlier in the drive that tandem connected on a fourth down and four play that went for 14 yards.
 Lake Erie responded to that score with a touchdown drive finished by a Sean Bedevelsky nine-yard pass to Demetrius Gray with 4:10 left to go up 13-7.  The Builders responded with something that hasn't happened in 10-12 years.
 Freshman Deondre James caught the kickoff on the Builder 17, scooted around the far sideline and ran 83-yards for the first kickoff return for a touchdown since the late 1990s and giving the Builders a 14-13 lead.  Apprentice School (1-4) closed the first half with a Caralla to McKee 31-yard scoring pass with 50 seconds left to give the Builders a 20-13 halftime advantage.
 The second half turned into one of the wilder Apprentice School outings in recent years.  The Builders scored on its first two possessions in the second half as Caralla and McKee connected on a one-yard scoring pass and Caralla hooked up with senior Markim Gordon on a 23-yard scoring pass with 3:29 left to give the Builders a 32-13 advantage.
 That was when the Storm started brewing in Painesville.  Two quick Bedevelsky to Romeo passes covered 63 yards to get Lake Erie to 32-20.  On the ensuing Builder drive, Caralla's pass was picked off by Ryan Studer who returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to get Lake Erie within six points at 32-26 with 41 seconds left in the third.
 In the fourth quarter, Lake Erie took the lead back on a Bedevelsky to Romeo 70-yard scoring pass to go up 33-32 with 7:39 left.  After an onside kick that was recovered by the Storm, Tony Howard busted through the middle of the line and ran 51 yards to give the hosts a 40-32 advantage.
 Apprentice School got back into the scoring race as Caralla threw his school record fifth touchdown hitting Bryan Cain on a 19-yard connection with 5:30 left.  The two-point attempt failed as the Builders trailed 40-38.
 Lake Erie sealed the deal with 35 seconds left as David Dunne's 36-yard interception return gave the Storm the 47-38 advantage.

QUICK SLANTS: With a win, Lake Erie would surpass its win total from its inaugural season... Lake Erie has won two straight on the road after opening the season with two straight road defeats... the game will mark Lake Erie's first in the state of Virginia... this is the first meeting with an opponent that the Storm defeated last season...the Apprentice School is playing just its second home game of the season.
