PAINESVILLE, Ohio (September 20, 2008) - Lake Erie College
recorded 557 total offensive yards to set the school record in
Saturday's game against Saint Joseph's College (Ind.) at Jack Britt
Memorial Stadium. Despite the onslaught of offense created by the
Storm, especially wide receiver Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor)
who totaled 158 yards on 14 catches and running back Tony
Howard (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) who rushed for 110
yards on 11 carries, the first three statistics being game records,
the Storm was outscored 58-35 by the Pumas.
It was the Storm that opened the day's scoring with a two-yard
touchdown run by Howard less than three minutes into the game,
making it 6-0 after an unsuccessful two-point conversion. The
Pumas answered with a touchdown, extra point and field goal before
the end of the first quarter to make it 10-6 in their favor.
Lake Erie wasn't done for the first period, however,
and added its second TD of the day on a 10-yard run by
Demetrius Gray (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland South), regaining
the lead at 12-10.
In the second period, Storm scoring was edged out by
Saint Joseph's, 14-10, with Lake Erie's Howard diving into the
end zone on a six-yard run followed by an extra point and
then a 32-yard field goal by freshman Cameron Szatala (Lorain,
Ohio/Admiral King). Lake Erie pushed the ball down field, gaining
49 yards in seven plays, making it to the 31-yard line before time
expired. The Storm totaled 358 offensive yards in the half,
compared to Saint Joseph's 121.
In the second half, Saint Joseph's came out firing with two
touchdowns in the opening six minutes. The Storm recorded its
fourth touchdown of the game on a 20-yard connection from freshman
quarterback Sean Bedevelsky (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) to James.
The Pumas again found the end zone just 19 seconds later on a
kickoff return to make it 45-29 in favor of the guests.
In the fourth quarter, Bedevelsky completed nine passes for 85
yards, including a 13-yarder to receiver David Krzys (Ashtabula,
Ohio/Lakeside) for the team's fifth touchdown of the afternoon. The
Pumas put two more in the end zone to end the game.
Lake Erie outdid the visitors statistically-speaking both in the
air and on the ground. Bedevelsky was 26-for-45 for a total of 308
yards. The Storm rushed for 249 yards - 36 more than the Pumas,
while passing for 149 more yards than its competitors. Lake Erie
was also a perfect 6-for-6 on red-zone scoring chances - a category
the team is ranked 39th in the nation.
Bill Finucan (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) had his second sack
of the season while leading the Storm with 12 tackles. Kenneth
Glenn (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights), Nick Viola (Wickliffe,
Ohio/VASJ) and Ryan Studer (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) totaled
six tackles apiece.
