Storm Snaps Losing Streak in Big Way

PAINESVILLE-For the D'Youville Lady Spartans, they can just say that they ran into the Lake Erie Storm at the wrong time.

Just three days after the Storm were beaten by Ursuline College, who picked up their first ever soccer win in school history, the Lady Spartans came into town looking for the same result. D'Youville is in its second year of existence, and they entered the game carrying a 21-game losing streak on their shoulders.

The Storm made sure that history was not made on their turf twice in a week, as Lake Erie scored six first half goals and never looked back as the Storm cruised to a 9-0 victory on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Leading the Storm attack was senior Katie Jayne who scored two goals and had three assists on the afternoon. Mandi Stachon and Lisa Gonzalez each picked up two goals apiece, and Gonzalez added an assist. Getting in on the action as well was senior goalkeeper Tracy Dolence who played in the field during the second half and scored two goals as well. For Gonzalez and Dolence, it was the first time in their careers that they scored a goal.

The game was never in doubt for the Storm as Jayne scored the first goal at the 4:37 mark of the first half on an assist from Annick Toulouse. The Storm went scoreless over the next 20 minutes but made up for it as they scored five goals in less than eight minutes to take a 6-0 lead at the half.

Dolence got the Storm rolling in the second half as she scored the first two goals of the half to extend the lead to 8-0 with about 17 minutes left in the game. Gonzalez capped the Lake Erie scoring when she scored an unassisted goal at the 78-minute mark to give Lake Erie a commanding 9-0 advantage.

Lake Erie's domination was evident ni the box score as they outshot the Lady Spartans by a 31-6 advantage, and D'Youvile goalkeeper Mariana Pesantez made 16 saves compared to Dolence and Krista Lander who combined to make four saves for the Storm. The win ups Lake Erie's mark to 2-12-1 overall, while D'Youville drops to 0-10 on the season.

For the Storm seniors, they are hoping that they continue their offensive production, as they will be back in action on October 11th when they will travel to Carnegie-Mellon College for a non-conference game. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00.
