Storm Fall to Eagles in Four Sets in G-MAC Opener

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Lake Erie Volleyball began G-MAC play on the road against the Ashland Eagles. The Storm would win a tightly contested first set, but the Eagles would win the next three sets and take the match.

Set 1: After the teams began the set exchanging points, the Storm would take a 13-10 lead after kills from Gabrielle Jones and Cecelia Mullen. The lead would be short lived for the time being as the Eagles would take the next six points to take a 16-13 lead. Lake Erie would chip away and take a 23-22 lead highlighted with a kill from Allison Kirch, a solo block from Jasmine Heyward, and a block from Kennady Wiley and Lexi Stooksbury. Extra points would be needed to decide the set. The Storm would take the set 26-24 after a block from Kirch and Rori Hanken
 
Set 2: The Eagles would grab early momentum taking an early 5-1 lead. The Storm would cut the deficit to 11-9 after two kills from Wiley. Ashland began to pull away growing their lead to 21-13. The Eagles would take the set 25-17.  
 
Set 3: Teams exchanged points to begin the set. The Storm would take an 12-9 after three Eagles miscues and a kill from Wiley. Ashland would take seven of the next eight points to take a 16-13 lead. Lake Erie would tie it back up at 18 with kills from Heyward, Wiley, and Jones. The Eagles would then take the next three points, going back in front 21-18. The Storm would bring the deficit to one three times but would not get over the hump as Ashland would hold on 25-23.
 
Set 4: The Eagles would grab momentum early in the set with their lead at 13-7. The Storm would fight back to tie the set at 14, taking advantage of multiple errors, a kill and an ace from Kirch. Lake Erie would take an 18-16 lead after a block from Heyward and Wiley, an ace from Wiley, and a kill from Hanken. Ashland would put their foot down and take nine of the last 10 points to take the set 25-19.

Lake Erie has now lost nine straight matches against Ashland and are now 1-20 all-time. The lone win for Lake Erie came in 2015 at home with a five-set victory.

Looking Ahead
 
Lake Erie continues G-MAC play on the road against Walsh University on Saturday, September 20th at 2 p.m. 
 
Walsh is currently 6-3 overall and 1-0 in G-MAC play to begin the season, with a win against Ursuline to open conference play. In 2024, the Cavaliers finished 18-13 and 10-6 in the G-MAC. In the 2025 preseason poll, the Cavaliers were picked to finish 2nd in the G-MAC East division.
