PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie women's basketball team hosted the Cedarville Yellow Jackets for another Great Midwest matchup. The Storm fought very hard but would end up falling just short as they suffered a 58-52 loss.
Game Recap
The first quarter was an uneventful one for the Storm. They ended the period with a 20-5 deficit and looked to regroup in the second. They came out of the break with a newfound aggression and drive though as they controlled the entire quarter and outscored the Yellow Jackets 23-11 for one of their most impressive periods of the season.
With hope brewing and just a 31-28 deficit, the Storm sent Cedarville into the locker room looking defeated.
It was more of an even affair in the third with both sides playing very tough, physical defense. By the end, Cedarville would just edge out Lake Erie, 14-12.
In the fourth, it was another tight contest. Down to the final last two minutes in the game, Cedaville's anxiety showed. With them fouling the Storm just as much as the Storm fouled them.
Grace Lyon drew the first one and converted one of her shots to bring the deficit to 56-51. On the Yellow Jackets's next possession, the Storm defense was on lockdown and forced a shot clock violation. After the Storm fouled again, Cedarville committed a foul of their own on the inbound pass, giving Lake Erie the ball back with 43 left on the clock.
Nina Shaffer drew a tough foul next shot and made one of her free thorws, bringing the deficit now down to 56-52. Despite the Storm giving Cedarville another foul on the next possession, they were unable to make both shots and the Storm now had the ball back with 29 second remaining.
Unfortunatly, this was all that Lake Erie was able to do and they would finish with a final score of 58-52.
The Storm displayed a ton of resilience in the game and it showed that despite being on the backend of the season, they are fighting hard every single game.
Lillee Carlson led the team with 13 points while also grabbing five boards and two steals. Kyle Maxwell led on the defensive end with nine rebounds and one block.
The Matchup
Lake Erie has now dropped three straight to Cedarville but has made each one competitive, losing by an average of just six points during the skid.
Looking Ahead
The Storm will get their chance at a rematch very shortly as their next contest is on the road at Cedarville on Thursday, February 13th at 5:30 p.m.
