Hot Shooting Storm Fall Just Short in Season Opener

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie women's basketball team hosted Slippery Rock University for their season opener. Both sides played a tough, close battle but the Storm would come up just short, falling 83-78.

Game Recap

The Rock jumped out to an early 10–0 lead and maintained that momentum throughout the first quarter, finishing with a 21–12 advantage.

The Storm came out firing in the second, shooting 53.3% in the quarter while holding Slippery Rock to 35.3%. Their strong play trimmed the deficit to just one point heading into the second half.

Slippery Rock continued to push their lead in the third, but each time The Rock tried to pull away, the Storm responded. With 5:31 left in the quarter, Sydney Shocklee knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 47. From there, Slippery Rock found a rhythm and went up by eight heading into the fourth.

The Storm kept pace in the final quarter, cutting the lead to as little as four and outscoring Slippery Rock 19–16. Despite the strong finish, they came up just short in a tightly contested game.

Nina Shaffer led the Storm with 19 points, while newcomer Marcela Rodriguez added 18 in an impressive debut.

As a team, the Storm showed significant improvement from last season. They shot 50% from the field, something they achieved only once last year, and their 47.4% shooting from three marked their best performance from deep since December 11, 2023.
