Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Storm Offense Stands Strong in Loss to Northwood

MIDLAND, Michigan -- The Lake Erie women's basketball team began the new year with a strong offensive performance against the Northwood University Timberwolves. Despite the high scoring, the Storm were unable to pull off the victory, falling 98-74 on the road.

Game Recap

Lake Erie got off to a slow start in the first quarter. Although they put up 15 shots compared to Northwood's 13, the Storm hit just 20 percent of them and knocked down one three pointer in the process.

The two sides bounced back and forth in the second, each scoring 20 and keeping the score at just a single-digit deficit, 42-34.

In the second half, the Storm trimmed down the Northwood lead to just five points two separate times but by the end of the quarter they started to pull away and continued that run throughout the rest of the game.

In just her second game of the season, the presence of Grace Lyon seems to have had a positive effect on the Storm's identity. She led the way once again, this time with 19 points and five rebounds while grabbing one steal as well.

Anna Ibos scored 12 off the bench and grabbed four rebounds of her own. Defensively, Nina Shaffer added four steals and Caitlin Titler had three of her own.

As a team, they Storm created a ton of pressure, forcing 23 turnovers in addition to 12 steals. Offensively, they shot 38.1 percent and 33.3 from deep.

The Matchup

The loss gives the Storm a 1-4 all-time record against the Timberwolves in the small sample size. They will get their chance to even the season series on Thursday, February 27th at home.

Looking Ahead

For a team that has averaged 47.7 points per game against conference opponents coming into tonight's game, their 74 points against the Timerwolves is a positive sign for the Storm squad. They'll look to continue that success on Saturday, January 4th on the road against Hillsdale College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
