ERIE, Pennsylvania – The Lake Erie men's soccer team kicked off the 2024 season on the road against #7 Ganon University. It was not a pretty opener for the Storm as they were unable to handle the Golden Knights and suffered a 5-0 shutout.
The Storm and Golden Knights came out of the gate looking very evenly matched. It wasn't until the 30
th minute that Gannon finally broke the scoreless tie on an unassisted goal by Sverre Orten.
After the score, the tide began to shift. In the 34
th minute, Lake Erie goalkeeper
Jasper Rump laid out for a nice stop but was unable to prevent the ball from rolling across the line, giving Gannon a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, it was all Golden Knights. The Storm would concede two goals withing the first five minutes and all but put the game out of reach. Gannon was able to tack on one more in the 76
th minute and wrap things up with a final score of 5-0.
The Storm managed just four shots in the game, two in each half, while the Golden Knights totaled 23 with 14 on goal.
Despite conceding five goals, Rump saved nine shots in his Lake Erie debut.
The Storm will be back in action on Thursday, September 12 on the road to take on UIndy who are currently ranked 15
th.
