Storm Shutout Ashland to Remain Undefeated in G-MAC Play

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie men's soccer team hosted the Ashland University Eagles today at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium. The Stom came away with a 2-0 victory and improve their record to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in G-MAC competition.

Game Recap
Coming off a non-conference loss to Davenport, Lake Erie looked to get back on track by returning to G-MAC play. It didn't take too long for the Storm to get a point on the board as Aaron Garrote found Linus Oestlund in the 11th minute who beat out a defender and the goalkeeper to give Lake Erie the lead.

The Eagles got off three shots before the end of the first half but Jasper Rump was there to collect two saves and keep them scoreless.

With tensions building up between both sides, the first yellow card of the match was finally issued in the 55th minute to Tomas Fernandez, his third of the season. Not long after, Reighly Burke received his first yellow card of the season in the 61st minute.

Ashland earned a yellow card of their own in the 76th minute but shortly after in the 83rd minute, Garrote found the net with an assist from Jack Bole. This was enough to take down the Eagles as the Storm walked away with a 2-0 victory.

It was a pretty even match for the most part. Ashland just managed to just out shoot Lake Erie 9-8 (5-4 SOG) but time of possession inside their opponent's territory gave the Storm the edge.

Rump was fantastic for his team in the game, recording five saves en route to his third shutout of the season.

Garrote finished with a goal and an assist for a total of three points. He now has two goals and two assists on the year which leads the Storm and his six points rank third in the G-MAC.

The Matchup
With today's win, the Storm have now won back-to-back games against the Eagles. In their last six meeting though, the two sides break even at 3-3. Prior to that, the Storm enjoyed a six-game win streak dating from 2016 through 2021. All-time, Lake Erie is now 11-8 against Ashland.

Looking Ahead
Lake Erie will travel to Findlay, Ohio Saturday, September 28th to face the University of Findlay Oilers at 1 p.m. They will continue their road trip with matchups against D'Youville and Cedarville before returning home October 10th to face Thomas More at 1 p.m.
