Volleyball Falls to Oilers at Home in Three Sets

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Volleyball team returned home to continue G-MAC competition as they would compete against the Findlay Oilers. The Storm played competitively, but the Oilers would win in straight sets. Lake Erie moves to 0-2 in the G-MAC and 2-8 overall. 

Game Recap

The first set would see the Storm struggle out of the gate as the Oilers would race out to an early 9-2. Three straight Lake Erie kills by senior Anna Lewis, freshman Allison Kirch, and redshirt freshman Rori Hanken would cut the Findlay lead to 9-5. With the Oilers in front 13-8, The Storm would take the next five points with kills from senior Katelyn McMoore and sophomore Diamond Baker, along with an ace from Baker. Lake Erie would only win three more points the rest of the set as Findlay would take advantage of Lake Erie miscues and would win the first set by a score of 25-16. 

The second set would see the Oilers grab an early 4-1 on more Storm miscues, but the Storm would rebound. Lake Erie would take the next five points with Findlay attack errors and two aces from sophomore Jenna Sayles to take a 6-4 lead. The Storm lead would grow to 9-5 after two kills and an ace from Kirch. The Oilers would claw their way back into the set by tying the score at 13-13 following a kill and an ace. After Lake Erie would take an 18-17 lead following a Kirch kill, Findlay would win eight of the next 10 points to come away with the second set by a score of 25-20. 

The third set would see each team exchanging points to open the set. The Oilers would see a lead as they would take a 10-7 lead following a bad set from the Storm. Lake Erie would get to see the lead next as they would grab a 14-12 lead following two aces from Baker. Another ace, this time from freshman Cecelia Mullen, would see the Storm lead at 17-14. Findlay would grab the momentum as they would take seven of the next eight points and take advantage of multiple Lake Erie attack errors to take a 21-18 lead. The Storm would strike right back as they would win the next four points with two Oilers attack errors and kills from Hanken and Kirch to take a 22-21 lead. Three Findlay kills and a bad set from Lake Erie would see Findlay grab the third set by a score of 25-22. 

The Storm offense was led by Kirch, who had 10 kills. From the service line, Baker would have three aces and Sayles and Mullen would each pitch in two of there own. Sayles would also lead the team with 10 assists. The Storm offense would see a block by McMoore and sophomore Kennady Wiley, and senior Brooklyn Broadway leading the team with 13 digs. 

The Matchup

With the Lake Erie loss to Findlay, the Storm have lost 11 consecutive matches against the Oilers with the last Storm victory coming back at home in 2017.

Lake Erie will travel to Ursuline College to continue G-MAC competition on Wednesday, September 25th at 6 p.m.
