ROCHESTER, New York -- The Lake Erie Volleyball stepped out of G-MAC play and traveled to New York to play Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks. The Storm would take a set against the Redhawks, who would win the match in four tightly contested sets with three sets needing extra points. The Storm move to a 2-7 overall record.
The first set would see a highly competitive battle from beginning to end. The Storm would get the early edge in the set grabbing a 2-0 lead with kills from senior
Katelyn McMoore and sophomore
Diamond Baker, each assisted by senior
Simone Schurr. The Redhawks would grab the next three points for a 3-2 lead. The teams would then exchange the lead back and forth. With the score tied at 13-13 after a block by redshirt freshman
Rori Hanken and a kill by McMoore, Roberts Wesleyan would take the next four points after two Lake Erie attack errors to take a 17-13 lead. Each team would begin to trade points with the score for the Redhawks now at 22-18 after a Storm attack error. Lake Erie would take five of the next six points from Roberts Wesleyan with the help of two blocks from McMoore and Baker, and kills from McMoore and Baker and tie the game at 23-23. A Redhawks kill and Storm attack error would give the Redhawks the next two points to give the first set win by a score of 25-23.
The second set would see another back and forth battle from beginning to end. Each team would exchange points early on and the Storm would take an early 7-4 advantage after a Redhawks attack error. Roberts Wesleyan would fight back and take four of the next five points to tie the score at 8-8. Teams would beginning trading points until Lake Erie would grab a 15-13 lead after three Hanken kills. The Redhawks would grab the momentum in the set by winning seven of the next eight points after multiple kills and would have a 20-16 advantage. The Storm would strike and take six of the next seven points with a block by Baker and McMoore, two kills from freshman
Allison Kirch and a block by Kirch and senior
Anna Lewis along with two Redhawks attack errors to grab a 22-21 lead. Extra points were needed to finish this set off as 25 points were not enough. With the score tied at 26-26, the Storm would get a kill from McMoore and an ace from senior
Sarah Leyden to take the second set by a score of 28-26.
The third set was another battle until the end and would need extra points for a second straight set. The beginning of the set would see the teams exchanging points early and often. Roberts Wesleyan would be the first team to grab a lead in the set as they would take a 9-6 lead following a Lake Erie attack error. The Storm would claw their way back and take a 15-13 lead after a kill from Hanken, a block by Baker, and an ace by senior
Brooklyn Broadway. Teams would exchange points again until Lake Erie would take a 21-19 advantage following kills by Kirch and Baker. Roberts Wesleyan would take the next four points and take a 23-21 lead. With the score tied at 24, a Storm attack error and a Redhawks kill would give the Redhawks the third set by a score of 26-24.
The fourth set would see the Redhawks jump out to an early 5-2 lead following Storm attack errors. Lake Erie would begin to find their footing in the set by grabbing a 9-7 lead following a kill by freshman
Gabrielle Jones. The Storm lead would grow to 13-10 after a block by Lewis and Jones and a block by Hanken and Lewis. Roberts Wesleyan would see three kills diminish the Lake Erie lead to tie the set at 13-13. The Storm would then take the next four points after a block by Lewis and Hanken, a kill by McMoore, a Kirch ace, and a block by McMoore and Lewis giving the Storm a 17-13 lead. The Redhawks would claw their way back to tie the game at 19-19 following Lake Erie attack errors. After a brief exchange in points, the Storm would grab a 24-23 lead following a kill by Jones, assisted by sophomore
Jenna Sayles, and a block by Lewis and Kirch. Roberts Wesleyan would take the next three points from Lake Erie and would steal the fourth set by a score of 26-24
The Storm offense would see three players have over 10 kills with Kirch leading the way with 14 kills. Schurr would lead the team with 24 assists with Leyden chipping in 17 assists. The Storm defense was led by Lewis, who had a career high eight blocks, and Broadway, who had a team high 19 digs.
Lake Erie will jump back into G-MAC play and head home to play the University of Findlay on Saturday, September 21st at 4 p.m.
