Broadway Reaches Milestone as Volleyball Falls to Chargers

HILLSDALE, Michigan -- The Lake Erie volleyball team headed to Michigan to continue G-MAC competition against the Hillsdale Chargers. Senior Brooklyn Broadway would record her 1000th career dig during the match, but the Chargers would take a straight sets victory against the Storm. Lake Erie is now 4-8 in the G-MAC and 7-17 overall.

Game Recap

The first set would see the Storm race out to an early 8-3 lead after kills from freshman Allison Kirch, junior Jasmine Heyward, and sophomore Diamond Baker, an ace from senior Simone Schurr, and a block by Kirch and senior Anna Lewis. Lake Erie would continue to maintain their lead at 14-9 after a block by Kirch and Baker, and kills from redshirt freshman Rori Hanken and Baker, each assisted by senior Sarah Leyden. After two kills from Heyward for an 18-14 lead, the Chargers would grab the momentum by taking the next seven points to take a 21-18 lead. The Storm would then take the next three points following kills from Heyward and Hanken to tie the set at 21-21. Hillsdale would take the next four points to win the first set by a score of 25-21.

The second set saw the Chargers race out to an early 8-2 lead taking advantage of Storm miscues. Hillsdale would continue to grow their lead to 13-5. The Chargers would keep their foot on the pedal taking a 19-9 lead. A triple block by Heyward, Baker and senior Alexandra Matthews, kills by Baker, Hanken, and Kirch, and an ace from Baker would not be enough for Lake Erie as Hillsdale would take the second set by a score of 25-15.

The Storm would continue to grow their lead taking a 17-13 advantage after kills from McMoore and Heyward as well as taking advantage of Chargers miscues. Hillsdale would fight back cutting the Lake Erie lead to 22-20. A kill by Lewis would not be enough for the Storm as the Chargers would take five of the next six points to take the third set by a score of 25-23.

The Storm offense was led by Heyward, who would post seven kills. Schurr would lead the team with 12 assists and Leyden would have 10. The Storm defense was led by Baker and Lewis, each posting three blocks, and Broadway would lead the team with 14 digs.
