PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie football team hosted the Ashland University Eagles today in another Great Midwest matchup. The Storm held their own in the first half but fell to the Eagles 41-14. The loss drops their record to 2-7 on the year and 1-6 in G-MAC play.
Game Recap
Lake Erie began the game by winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half and in Ashland's first possession, they went up 7-0 on an 8-play, 60 yard drive. The Storm were unable to match on their first series but on Ashland's first offensive play,
Cameron Webb ripped away the ball from a receiver and
Ronald Cutts Jr. pounced on it, giving Lake Erie the ball on Ashland's 44.
The Storm offense marched down the field and capped off the drive with a lob to
Tae'Shaun Johnson for a touchdown. An extra point conversion by
Jaffer Murphy would knot the game up at 7-7.
The Eagles responded with a touchdown of their own but missed the point, giving them back the lead but putting the Storm in prime position to take the reigns with a touchdown and extra point conversion.
Ashland extended their lead to 20-7 to begin the second quarter and both sides would go scoreless the remainder of the half to keep the score as-is.
In the second half, the Eagles scored twice in each quarter and the Storm were able to get one more touchdown from Johnson but they ultimately fell, 41-14.
Johnson was once again fantastic, grabbing 11 receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
Alec Lewis completed 26-of-39 passes for 247 yards and no turnovers.
On defense,
Cameron Webb led the team with nine total tackles in addition to his forced fumble. On special teams,
Daniel Jamieson averaged 37.8 yards per punt on the day and totaled 227 yards.
The Matchup
The Eagles came into today's matchup receiving top-25 votes and the Storm's early game success is a bright spot in the loss. Lake Erie is now 1-10 all-time against the Eagles and will look to snap their losing streak next season on Ashland's home turf.
Looking Ahead
Lake Erie will host the Ohio Dominican Panthers next week, Saturday, November 9th for their second-to-last home contest of the year. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
