Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer: Heartbreak in 86th Minute

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie women's soccer team played Cedarville on Tuesday, and nearly escaped with a tie against a very talented Yellow Jacket's squad. Unfortunately, with less than four minutes left in the match, Cedarville finally got their 22nd shot of the game to fall, sending the Storm home with a painful loss. Lake Erie now sits with a 1-7-1 record on the season.

Game Recap

A reoccurring theme has plagued the Storm thus far this season in the form of shot differential. In the match, Lake Erie was able to attempt just three shots in the full 90 minutes. Cedarville, on the other hand, had four shots just within minutes 17-24. It's hard to win games when your opponent has nineteen more shots than you, yet, much to the Storm's credit, the women did a fabulous job of making life hard on the Yellow Jacket's attackers. Defenders Pauline Passarge, Kim Lorenz, and Alexia Pallas, along with goalkeeper Morgan Vanmeter, were the only Storm players to play all 90 minutes, and for good reason! This unit did a fabulous job of bending but not breaking, causing great frustration from Cedarville. Opportunity after opportunity came and passed, as Lake Erie survived everything the Yellow Jacket's could muster for 86 minutes. Sadly, Cedarville was able to convert with roughly 200 seconds left, squeaking out a win in the face of an imminent tie. This loss stings badly, as the Storm were playing overall one of their best performances of the year against one of the G-MAC's top contenders. Additionally, it feels eerily reminiscent of the Lake Erie men's soccer team's recent loss at Cedarville, as in their case, they lost with only five seconds remaining.

The Matchup

Tuesday's loss puts the all-time record against Cedarville at 0-10. Five of the losses have now came by a one-score deficit. The team's will matchup again in less than two weeks, as Cedarville comes to town on Saturday, October 19th at 1pm, hosted at Mentor High School.

Looking Ahead

The Storm have back-to-back home games coming up in their near future, as they host Thomas More on Saturday and California (PA.) on Tuesday, both at 1pm. Thomas More started their season 3-0 against non-conference opponents, yet have had a much more difficult time within G-MAC play, as they are 0-3-3 since their hot start. As for California (PA.), this will be the first time the Storm have ever matched up against the Vulcans in school history. While certainly harder to evaluate due to the lack of history and differing conferences, the Vulcans recently tied 0-0 against the number two ranked team in DII Gannon, showing they are not a team to mess with.
