NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie women's soccer team traveled down the road on Thursday to square off against Walsh, dropping the match 4-2.
Game Recap
The Storm found themselves down early, as Walsh came out of the gates swinging, shooting three shots within the first eight minutes, scoring on one of them. However, following an extended possession for Lake Erie that consisted of three corner kicks,
Alyvia Sanom scored her first goal in a Storm uniform, sneaking it past the goalkeeper 11 minutes into the game. Walsh would quickly respond, again, attempting three shots in the next 10 minutes and converting on one, upping their lead to 2-1. Lake Erie's deficit would continue to surmount, as the Cavaliers took advantage of a penalty kick in the 39th minute, bringing their lead to 3-1 as the teams entered halftime.
While certainly not the position the Storm wished to be in, their resilience never faded, as they played with great fire and passion in an effort to combat their bout against the score and the clock. With 10 minutes remaining,
Leonie Witt came up huge for the Storm, placing a beautiful high-left shot past the out-stretched arms of the goalie to make it a one-score game. Unfortunately, their joy would be short-lived, as Walsh quickly re-stretched their lead to 4-2 in the 83rd minute, putting an unofficial seal on the contest. Lake Erie was unable to respond, dropping to 1-6-1 on the season and 0-4-1 in G-MAC settings.
The key takeaway remains to be the lack of good-looks for scoring, as the Storm attempted only five shots in comparison to 15 for the Cavaliers. What's been consistent and remains promising, however, is their efficiency when shooting, as the 40% goal/shot percentage in this contest indicates (two goals on five shots).
The Matchup
Lake Erie historically fares worse against the Cavaliers than just about any other opponent in recent memory. The loss on Thursday puts the Storm now win-less in their last 13 contests against the Cavaliers, with the last win coming in 2013. The overall matchup record now sits at 1-14-1 in Walsh's favor.
Looking Ahead
The Storm have some time off before they continue action on the road against Cedarville on Tuesday to take on the Yellow Jackets. The preseason selection to finish third in the G-MAC by coaches, Cedarville struggled early on against strong non-conference opponents, collecting a 0-2-1 record after three games. Climbing back to a respectable 4-3-2 record, as they have recently fared much better against conference foes, they will enter the matchup with the Storm following what should be a very interesting game on Saturday against the top team in the G-MAC and #8 nationally ranked Ashland Eagles.
Catch the next Storm home game on Saturday, October 12th at 1pm, as they take on the Saints from Thomas More. Previewing that game, in a complete contrast to Cedarville, Thomas More cleanly swept all non-conference games, beginning the year 3-0 but have since gone win-less in five conference matchups.
