Career Highs Lead to Four-Set Victory Over Malone

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie volleyball team returned home to continue G-MAC play as they welcomed the Malone Pioneers. The Storm would take a four-set victory with multiple players setting career-highs in the match. Lake Erie is now 4-7 in the G-MAC and 7-16 overall. 

Game Recap 

The first set would begin with the Storm taking an early 5-2 lead after kills from senior Katelyn McMoore, and an ace from senior Brooklyn Broadway. Lake Erie would continue to grow the lead to 14-4 with a solo block from freshman Allison Kirch and kills from redshirt freshman Rori Hanken and Kirch. Malone would then cut the lead down to 16-11. The Storm would grow the lead back to 22-15 with kills from junior Jasmine Heyward and sophomore Diamond Baker. Lake Erie would get three more kills from Kirch and Baker and would take the second set by a score 25-16.

The second set would see the Pioneers take early momentum taking an early 5-2 lead. After a Malone kill to give Malone a 13-10 lead, Lake Erie would take eight of the next nine points with kills from Hanken and Kirch and take an 18-14 lead. The Storm would continue to grow their lead to 23-17 with kills from McMoore, Hanken, and Kirch, and a block from Kirch and senior Anna Lewis, and a block from Lewis and McMoore. A kill from Heyward and a Pioneers attacking error would give Lake Erie the second set by a score of 25-20. 

The third set would Malone jolt out to an early 7-1 lead taking advantage of Lake Erie miscues. The Storm would tie the set at 9-9 after a block by Baker and Heyward, kills from Heyward, Kirch, and Hanken, and an ace from freshman Cecelia Mullen. After exchange in points, the score was brought to 22-22. Extra points would be needed to finish this set as 25 would not be enough. After a McMoore kill to tie the score at 24-24, the Pioneers would take the next two points to win the third set by a score of 26-24. 

The fourth set would begin with a brief exchange in points. After a 4-2 lead for Malone, Lake Erie would take the next seven points with a block by senior Alexandra Matthews and Hanken and two aces from Mullen and take a 9-4 lead. The Storm would grow their lead to 16-10 after a block from McMoore and Lewis, a kill from Heyward, and an ace from Lewis. The Pioneers would cut the lead to 17-15. Lake Erie would grow their lead to 22-17 with an ace from senior Simone Schurr. A block by Lewis and Kirch, and kills from McMoore and Lewis would give the fourth set to Lake Erie with a score of 25-20. 

The Storm would see the offense have four players have over 10 kills, with Heyward leading with a career-high 14. Mullen would lead from service line with three aces. Schurr and senior Sarah Leyden would each have 24 assists. The Storm defense was led by Lewis, who would have five blocks, and Broadway would lead the team tying a career-high of 34 digs.  

The Matchup

With the win, Lake Erie sweeps the season series against Malone, and Lake Erie has now won three of the last four matches in the series. 

Looking Ahead

Lake Erie will begin a road trip to Michigan to continue G-MAC play to play Hillsdale College on Saturday, November 2nd at 5 p.m.
