PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The women's soccer team welcomed the #3 ranked Ashland Eagles for G-MAC competition on Saturday, losing the match 2-0. The Storm fans celebrated it's seniors before the game, showing their appreciation for all the time, effort, and energy the women put towards their team, schoolwork, and community. We can't thank them enough; they will be sorely missed but undoubtedly will go out and make the world a better place.
Game Recap
Lake Erie's defense played a phenomenal game against the talented Eagle offense, as although Ashland controlled possession on Lake Erie's side for a wide majority of the game, the Storm would only enter halftime down 1-0 and never seemed out of the game until the final buzzer sounded. Against a team returning seven All-Conference players from the prior season and who's been running through the conference handily, the Storm never once bowed down. Despite their inability to formulate much offensively, the defense showed it's prowess in full effect, shutting down many opportunities the Eagles found. They were willing to concede corner kicks to visitors, as Ashland took a whopping 17 in the match, finding no success against the formidable Storm positioning and game-plan.
The Storm tried three shots in the competition, with attempts coming from
Alyvia Sanom,
Makenna Sanom, and
Brenna Walker. Goalkeeper
Morgan Vanmeter added six more saves to her season totals, placing her at 90 saves total, a mark which currently leads the conference.
All six seniors for the Storm (
Brenna Walker,
Ava Finfrock,
Corinne Shimek,
Madison Amburgey,
Leyna McCarty, and
Madison Jester) saw playing time, a wonderful move by Coach Contrascier.
The Matchup
The Storm are still seeking their first victory against the Eagles, as Saturday's loss moves the team's matchup history to 0-17-1.
Looking Ahead
Lake Erie has three more regular season games left on schedule this season: Tiffin at home on October 31st, Ohio Dominican away on November 2nd, and Ursuline at home on November 6th to wrap up the season. As for Tiffin, they will come to Jack Britt Memorial Stadium on Halloween for a 1:00 p.m. matchup in a battle for pride, as both teams are fighting to avoid last-place in the G-MAC standings. While the Storm currently boast a better overall record than Tiffin (2-12-1 compared to Tiffin's 1-12-2), Tiffin earned their lone win over G-MAC foe Thomas More, whereas Lake Erie won both of their games against non-conference opponents. Therefore, Lake Erie currently sits at the bottom of the conference, yet that would change with a win on Thursday, marking the game as imperative for both schools.
