PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie women's soccer team welcomed the Tiffin Dragons for a Halloween edition of G-MAC game-play on Thursday, convincingly walking out with a 3-0 victory. The win marks the first conference victory for the Storm on the season and moves their overall record to 3-12-1.
Game Recap
The Storm wasted no time as the team leader in goals,
Leonie Witt, struck gold a mere three minutes into the game. Lake Erie was very close to widening their lead in the 11th minute as three consecutive shots would be fired off by
Ainsley MacKenzie,
Makenna Sanom, and
Alyvia Sanom, yet the Dragons held strong and the game remained at 1-0 in favor of the Storm. The rest of the period would be relatively quiet, as the Dragons only attempted three shots in the entire period, a testament to the stifling Storm defense and their ability to retain possession on offense.
In the second period, Tiffin made it a point of emphasis to get as many shots up as possible to give themselves a fighting chance. They would post a staggering 15 shots in the second period, yet only three were on target requiring saves from Storm goalkeeper
Morgan Vanmeter. In the mean time, Lake Erie would extend their lead in the 72nd minute via penalty kick, as Witt scored her second goal, tying her for fourth most in the conference and increasing the Storm lead to 2-0. For good measure,
Ainsley MacKenzie would placing the finishing touches on the match, scoring her second goal of the season off of a beautifully placed shot in the top right corner.
The Matchup
The win on Thursday moves the all-time record against Tiffin to 6-11-1, snapping a four-game losing streak in the series. The last Lake Erie victory came back in 2019.
