Storm Fight Off the Saints Early Scoring to Draw 2-2

BUFFALO, New York -- The Lake Erie men's soccer team competed on the road today in their final non-conference matchup of the season against the D'Youville University Saints. The Storm went down early but fought their way back to draw a tie and finish the game, 2-2. The draw puts their overall record at 4-3-1 and they remain 3-1 in G-MAC play.

Game Recap
The Storm, coming off a tough 3-0 G-MAC loss to Findlay, were hoping to get a bounce back win against the D'Youville Saints. This, unfortunately, was not going to be the case. In just the fifth minute of play, a foul by Kacy Parish led to a penalty kick by D'Youville. They would successfully score and go up very suddenly, 1-0.

After recovering from that initial blow, the Saints caught Lake Erie once again, this time on a goal by Paulo Carvalho, assisted by Ethan Robinson in the 25th minute. What was supposed to be a bounce back win, was suddenly looking like it might be in jeopardy.

However, in the 31st minute, the Storm finally got on the board when Biel Font found Reighly Burke for his first career goal. The Storm rode that high and just one minute later, scored again when Tomas Fernandez found Aaron Garrote for his third goal of the season.

With his assist, Fernandez has now tied the Lake Erie career record at 22 and sits on top with Joe Starvaggi (2005-07) and Teddy Baker (2021-22).

Neither team was able to score again though and the game would end with a 2-2 tie.

The Matchup
Lake Erie almost ruined their undefeated record today against the Saints, but thankfully for their comeback, they now sit at 5-0-1 all-time. This was the first matchup between the two teams in 17 years, when the Storm last won 7-1 on September 18, 2007. The Storm have completely dominated D'Youville in the past, winning by an average margin of 6.4 goals before today.

Looking Ahead
The Storm will be back in action this Saturday, October 5th on the road against the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets at 1 p.m.. They will return home on Thursday, October 10th against the Northwood University Timberwolves at 1 p.m.
