PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie men's soccer team hosted the Thomas More University Saints today in an afternoon matchup. After hitting an 0-2-1 skid in their last three contests, the Storm got back on track with a big 2-1 win. They now improve to 5-4-1 on the season with a 4-2 record in conference play.
Game Recap
With a tough stretch behind them, Lake Erie hoped to stop the skid with a nice home victory. Unfortunately, early on, it did not appear like that would be the case as the Saints found a hole in the Storm defense and took an early 1-0 lead in just the eighth minute.
Lake Erie did not let that get them down though and although it took them a little linger to respond,
Tomas Fernandez found
Aaron Garrote for the game-tying goal in the 31st minute. Just seven minutes later, the Storm would strike again on a goal by
Luke Peperak which was assisted by
Randolf Rothe.
Both sides were a little more quiet in the second half but still made some close attempts at scoring again but as time expired, Lake Erie would walk away with a 2-1 victory.
Coming into today's game, with the Saints leading the Great Midwest in yellow cards and the Storm ranking second in fouls, it was anticipated to be a very physical game. This would prove to be true as the two sides combined for 27 fouls but only one yellow card (TMU, Tim Stolz).
With his assist on the Storm's first goal,
Tomas Fernandez broke out of a three-way tie and took sole possession as the Lake Erie career assists leader, knocking in the 23rd of his career and 3rd of the season. He is now one assist short of tying the G-MAC record of 24 career assists set by Ohio Valley's Alex Horenvo (2017-2018).
The Matchup
The Storm continue their undefeated run against the Saints and now improve to 3-0-1 all-time, with the lone tie coming as a penalty kick victory during last year's G-MAC Semifinals meeting.
Looking Ahead
Lake Erie will be on the road for back-to-back games starting this Saturday, October 12th against the Malone Pioneers before traveling to Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday, October 17th.
