PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie College men's basketball team took on the Walsh Cavaliers on senior night for their final regular season game of the year. Despite fighting hard again, the Storm would fall 71-66.
After the conclusion of Thursday's matchups around the conference, Lake Erie officially clinched a spot in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament. Going into their matchup with Walsh, there was still a chance that the Storm would finish with the fourth seed and the rights to host their quarterfinals matchup but a win was needed. Walsh on the other hand, would be fighting for the a shot at the #1 seed with a win as well as a Hillsdale loss.
In the contest, each team would have their turn with the lead but it was the Storm who would take the slight edge into the locker room at the conclusion of the first half with a score of 30-28.
Right our of the gate to start the second half, the Storm would still control that lead and manage to go up by eight at one point. The Cavaliers would bounce back though and start to take control of the game, stretching out their own lead to eight with little time left remaining.
PJ Jones wasn't going to let the Walsh walk away so easily, however. With an eight point and 1:25 left, Jones would knock down a huge three, trimming the Cavalier lead to 65-60. Next possession Walsh would turn the ball over and Jones would find
Jordan Burge for a layup, putting the Storm within two and just under a minute to go. Walsh would tack on another basket and two free throws with 20 seconds remaining and on the next possession, Jones would knock down another huge three and bring Lake Erie back within one basket. Unfortunately the Storm were forced to foul and the Cavaliers would knock both of those down, setting the final score at 71-66.
The Storm conclude the regular season with a 14-13 record and 11-9 record in conference play. With the loss to Walsh, they now drop to the seventh seed in the G-MAC Tournament and will visit second seeded Ashland on Tuesday, February 28 at 7:30 in the quarterfinals.
