PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Lake Erie women's volleyball team hosted the Findlay Oilers for their final home game of the season, as they honored their graduating seniors: Alana Stevens, Julianna Krebasch, Peyton Lemmer, Schylar Shepherd, Dora Olah, Taylor Metzler, Caitlin Farkas, and Hayley Lucarell. Several of the Storm seniors will be returning for their fifth year. Despite taking set three from the Oilers, the Storm fell in four competitive sets. Lake Erie moves to a 3-14 conference record and are 4-24 overall.
Set one was controlled by Findlay, as the Storm could only secure nine points. Set two started off with a double block from sophomore Jessica Ickes and Shepherd. The set stayed tight, with kills from the seniors Olah, McMoore, and Metzler. At a close score in the middle of the set, the Oilers took off on a long run to take the set 25-17.
Lake Erie was determined to fight back. Early kills from Metzler and Olah got the ball rolling, with help from Oiler errors. At a 15-15 tie, junior Sarah Leyden went on a three point run to pul ahead, with help from a kill by Olah and two aces. More errors from Findlay and a final kill from Olah gave the Storm the 25-21 win, forcing a fourth set.
Offensive efforts from Metzler, Shepherd, Ickes, Krebasch, and McMoore could not combat the Oilers offense. Findlay went on several runs to pull ahead, eventually taking the 25-15 match winning set.
Olah finished the match with 10 kills, followed by Metzler with five. Junior captain setter Simone Schurr recorded 16 assists, and Leyden with eight. Junior libero Brooklyn Broadway picked up 14 digs.
The Storm are on the road for their last two games of the 2023 season. Lake Erie heads to Cedarville on Friday, November 10th to take on the Yellow Jackets at 6:00 PM. Their last game of the season will be at Thomas More on Saturday, November 11th at 6:00 PM.
