SAULT STE. MARIE, Michigan -- The Lake Erie women's basketball team traveled to Sault STE. Marie, Michigan to take on the Lake Superior State University Lakers. Despite being down early, the Storm completed the comeback to defeat the Lakers 64-59. This win improves the Storm's record to 1-1 on the season.
After an early competitive first quarter, the Lakers extended their lead and were up by as many as nine after scoring eight straight. Although the Storm were able to slightly close the scoring gap, the Lakers seemed to control the lead. In the end of the third quarter, the Storm continued to fight and were able to take the lead for the first time in the game, after junior Anna Ibos made a 3-pt shot. Clutch free throw shooting in the final minute by sophomore transfer Ryan Elbert helped the Storm to victory.
This win by the Storm was a collective effort as they had four players finish in double digit scoring. Freshman Nina Schaffer led the Storm with 12 points and had an additional five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Ibos and freshman Gabrielle Russell both had 11 points for the Storm, both shooting 4 for 10 from the field. Ibos also added seven rebounds and 4 steals. Freshman Kylie Maxwell had 10 points and six rebounds, with a block and an assist as well. Elbert led the Storm in rebounds with eight, and freshman Sophie Chipps led the Storm in steals with five.
The Storms defense made a noticeable impact on the game as they put up an impressive 20 total steals, eight of them being in the fourth quarter. They were also able to score 18 points off 23 turnovers.
The Storm will be back in action when they travel to Ashland University to take on the No. 1 ranked Eagles. This game will be the start of Great Midwest Athletic Conference play and will take place on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
