CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie men's soccer team traveled tonight to take on the Cedarville Yellow Jackets and wrap up the 2023 regular season. With the Storm already having locked up the #2 seed in the Great Midwest Tournament, the Yellow Jackets still had much to fight for and would draw a tie, 2-2.
In their first meeting of the season, Lake Erie and Cedarville would tie 1-1. Early on in the second meeting, it looked like the game was once again headed towards a tie with the halftime score sitting at 0-0. Despite the scoreless effort, the Storm would outshoot the Yellow Jackets 5-0.
Just three minutes into the second half, the Storm got a big opportunity to get on the board when a penalty was committed in the box, setting up
Tom Akinola for the shot which he would successfully make and give his team a 1-0 lead.
Mathi Ott put one more on the board for the Storm in the 79th minute but the Yellow Jackets did not stay quiet for long.
In the 81st minute, Cedarville got on the board to cut the lead in half. With under a minute left to the play and the game looking all but over, the Yellow Jackets would score a dramatic goal with 30 second remaining to knot the game at 2-2.
This marks the second time this season that the two teams tied with each other and the Storm finish the 2023 regular season with a 10-5-3 record and 8-3-3 record in G-MAC play. They will now host the first round of the G-MAC Tournament and will wait to see who their opponent is.
