CANTON, Ohio — The Lake Erie women's volleyball team traveled to Malone University to take on the Pioneers for a second time this season. In a five set face off, the Storm was unable to take the final set at a 15–11 score. The Storm moves to a 3-11 conference record, and are 4-21 overall.
Lake Erie and Malone kept each of the five sets close. In the first set with a 25-20 finish for the Storm, both sides recorded 12 kills each. Despite a tight score throughout the first, three kills from freshman Ni'yah Fuggs, an ace from senior Taylor Metzler, mixed with Pioneers' errors gave the Storm the win.
Set two was similar, until the Storm's offense prevailed. Kills from senior Alexandra Matthews, Fuggs, sophomore Jessica Ickes, senior captain Dora Olah, and Metzler gave Lake Erie a lead of 18-13 that Malone could not come back from. A kill from Matthews and an error from Malone gave Lake Erie the second set, 25-18.
The Pioneers stayed persistent in the next three sets. Strong offense and a struggling defense from the Storm helped Malone secure the next three sets. Efforts from the Storm included Olah's 16 kills, 13 kills from Fuggs, and ten from Matthews. Junior captain Simone Schurr finished with 22 assists, followed by junior Sarah Leyden with 19. Junior libero Brooklyn Broadway picked up 15 digs.
The Storm continue their conference road play on Saturday, October 28th as they head to Walsh to take on the Cavaliers at 4:00 PM.
