Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Five Set Battle Ends in Storm Victory

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — The Lake Erie women's volleyball team traveled to Ursuline College to take on the Arrows for another G-MAC regular season game. In a back to back battle with the Arrows, the Storm would prevail and take the last set for a 3-2 win. Lake Erie advances to a 3-10 conference record and are 4-20 overall.

Each of the five sets stayed close. The Storm kept a strong offense in the first set to take the 25-17 win, recording 13 kills over Ursuline's seven. Sophomore Jessica Ickes was quick to start the offense with a kill, followed by enior captain Dora Olah. A seven point run from Ickes, starting with her kill, would give the Storm a 22-14 lead that the Arrows could not respond to.

The next set ended in the Arrows' favor, with efforts from senior Anna Lewis, senior Alexandra Matthews, senior Taylor Metzler, freshman Ni'yah Fuggs, and Olah. The Storm had fighting efforts in the end from Metzler and Matthews, but Lake Erie errors and a kill from Ursuline gave the Arrows the 25-18 win.

The third set was up in the air for either side. Fuggs started the Storm off strong with a kill, followed by Lewis and an ace from Ickes. At 19-20 Storm down by one, junior captain Simone Schurr would go on a three point run starting with a kill from Metzler to give Lake Erie a 22-20 lead. Despite a kill and an ace from the Arrows, back to back kills from Fuggs and Olah followed by an error from Ursuline gave the Storm the third set, 25-22.

Set four began with a double block from Fuggs and Ickes. The Arrows would not back down, as they took a 12-6 lead in the middle of the set. Matthews, Metzler, Olah, and Fuggs tried to combat, but Ursuline took the set 25-19, forcing a fifth set.

The Storm looked to take set five, starting things off with a kill from Olah. A tight score would take it to an 11-11 tie, but Lake Erie was determined to take the match. Two kills from Fuggs, an ce from junior libero Brooklyn Broadway, and an Arrows error gave Lake Erie the match winning set, 15-11.

Fuggs and Olah led the Storm in kills with 14 each. This would mark freshman Fuggs' new career high. Matthews was right behind with 12 kills. Junior Sarah Leyden and Schurr also tied with 22 assists each. Olah picked up 14 digs for the match, followed by Broadway with nine and Metzler with eight.

The Storm head to Malone University on Friday, October 27th to take on the Pioneers for a second time this season, starting at 7:00 PM.
