Women's Volleyball Compete with Panthers, Yet Fall in Three Sets

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Lake Erie women's volleyball team hosted the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers for a G-MAC match. Despite three close sets, the Storm was unable to take a game from the Panthers. The team moves to a 2-9 conference record and a 3-19 overall record.

The first set started off with a three point service run from senior Alana Stevens. Senior captain Dora Olah and senior Alexandra Matthews started their offense off strong with early kills in the set. The score stayed tight up to a 9-9 tie, before the Panthers went on a run that the Storm struggled to compete with. Errors from Kentucky Wesleyan gave Lake Erie some points going towards the end of the set, mixed with a kill from Matthews, but the Storm could not make a comeback. The Panthers took the first set 25-19.

The second set was tied up at 5-5, but the Panthers pulled a short lead to make it 8-5. Matthews ended the run with a kill, followed by an error from Kentucky Wesleyan brought the Storm back. Efforts from both sides kept the score close, with kills from senior Anna Lewis, Olah, and senior Katelyn McMoore. More errors from the Panthers brought the Storm up to 22-20 Kentucky Wesleyan up by two. However the Panthers were able to close out the set with a kill and Storm errors, 25-20.

The Storm went into the third set looking to force a fourth and fifth set to come back. Despite the Panthers growing a 6-1 lead, Lake Erie came back after a run from junior Sarah Leyden with a kill form freshman Ni'yah Fuggs. The score was tied throughout the match, up until the end. A service error, a kill from Matthews, and a service ace from junior captain Simone Schurr gave the Storm match point at 24-23, but the Panthers ended up taking the set off of two Storm errors and an ace.

Olah led the Storm in kills with six, followed by Matthews with five. Schurr finished with 11 assists, and Leyden with nine assists. Junior libero Brooklyn Broadway picked up nine digs.

The Storm continue their home matches on Saturday, October 21st to host the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans at 1:00 PM.
