PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Storm women's basketball team was back in action tonight with a thriller against the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans. After trailing by 11 points heading into the fourth quarter, Lake Erie shut down the Trojans to win in a nail-biting fashion 67-64. The key factors in the team's win were defense and perseverance. Lake Erie was outscored 25-11 in the third quarter, to bounce back and hold the Trojans to just 11 fourth-quarter points while pouring in 25 of their own points. Coaching adjustments and lock down defense set the tone to lead the Storm down by double digits, to a comeback win. This brings the Storm's overall record to 7-11 overall, and 3-7 in conference play.
Lake Erie was led by the tandem of senior forward Abby Matalavage and senior guard Sydney Wyngarden. Matalavage finished with a double-double and a team high of 21 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists in 32 minutes of action. Wyngarden was the catalyst on defense, ending with five of the team's total seven steals on the night. Wyngarden also finished with 17 points, five rebounds, and three assists in a team high 36 minutes of play. Sophomore guard Aislyn Hurst added 14 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal for the Storm. Senior guard Angela Fink had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and one block for Lake Erie.
Lake Erie shot an efficient 27-62 from the floor with a 43.5 shooting percentage. The Storm shot 5-17 from behind the arch at 29.4% and 8-11 from the foul line finishing at 72.7%. Lake Erie impressively held the Trojans to a mere 12 total points in the second quarter, and an even worse 11 total points in the fourth quarter. With the adjustments made by Coach Perdas and staff, the Storm were able to rally from behind for the thriller win.
Lake Erie is back in action at home against the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers for another inner-conference matchup on Saturday, January 28th. Tip off is set at 1:00 PM with the Lake Erie men's basketball team immediately following.
