Storm Volleyball Secures Two Wins

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Storm volleyball competed in the second day of the Lock Haven Invitational, securing their first two wins of the season against Lock Haven and D'Youville. This brings the Storm to a 2-4 record. The Storm beat the Lock Haven Bald Eagles 3-1, with set scores of 18-25, 25-16, 25-21, and 25-19. They beat the D'Youville Saints 3-0 with set scores of 25-21, 25-13, and 25-21. This brings the Bald Eagles to a 0-7 record and the Saints to a 3-4 record. 

Game 1 vs Lock Haven

The Storm started the day off with strong competition against the Bald Eagles. They took an early lead at 6-2 after senior libero Kaylee Hiser went on a five point run. The Storm came in swinging to start the match, with kills from junior middle Alexandra Matthews, senior outside Kariema Rodriguez-Diaz, freshman middle Jessica Ikes, junior middle Katelyn McMoore, and senior outside Jordan Taylor. Some Storm errors and a Bald Eagle service ace kept the Bald Eagles in the game, at a close score of 13-11, Storm. The Bald Eagles came back and tied it up at 16-16, before a long service run from the Bald Eagles mixed with a Storm error ended up giving the Bald Eagles the first set, 25-18.

The first set did not phase the Storm, as sophomore setter Simone Schurr went on a six point run to start the second set, giving the Storm a 6-0 lead. The Bald Eagles fought back with some kills, but the Storm continued to put the ball away with kills from Taylor, Rodriguez-Diaz, and Matthews, to further their lead at 18-8. McMoore and Taylor put down more kills to bring the set to a score of 21-13. The Bald Eagles' errors in combination with a game winning kill from Rodriguez-Diaz gave the Storm the second set, 25-16.

With the teams splitting the sets 1-1, the third set's score stayed tight. After a 9-9 tied score, the Storm was shaken up by some of their own errors and some Bald Eagle kills, giving Lock Haven the lead at 20-15. After an attack error from Lock Haven, Rodriguez-Diaz brought the Storm back with a seven point run, to pull ahead at 22-20, Storm. Two Bald Eagle errors along with a kill from junior middle Anna Lewis gave the Storm the third set, 25-21. 

The Storm was now up 2-1 in the match going into the fourth set. Schurr went on yet another service run to give the Storm another 6-0 lead. Kills from Ickes, McMoore, and Lewis kept them ahead at 11-8. The Bald Eagles went on a short run later in the fourth set to tie it up at 16-16. The scores flipped back and forth for both teams, before sophomore setter Sarah Leyden went on a four point service run to give the Storm the match winning set, 25-19. Matthews put the ball down for the final point. 

Rodruguez-Diaz finished the match with 11 kills, Schurr with 18 assists, and Hiser with 21 digs. 

Game 2 vs D'Youville

The Storm went into their final match of the invitational with a winning mindset. The score was tied at 8-8 before the Storm took over. Kills from Ickes, Matthews, and Lewis gave the Storm a 13-10 lead. The Saints battled back with kills of their own with some Storm errors to take the lead at 17-15. The score was tied up again at 20-20, with the last points in anyone's favor. Kills from Lewis, Rodriguez-Diaz, and Matthews gave the Storm some momentum before Schurr went on a three point run to finish up the set, 25-21 Storm. 

A nice four point run from Rodriguez-Diaz gave the Storm an early 4-0 lead to start the second set. The Saints continued to make errors while the Storm put down more kills, giving the Storm a ten point lead at 19-9. Dora Olah put down her first kill of the match, along with another kill from Matthews to bring the score to 20-12. Two service aces from Caitlin Farkas ended the set, giving the Storm the win at 25-13. 

The Storm kept the momentum going in the third set, creating a 11-3 lead early on. The Saints responded with some kills, but could not beat the outstanding offense and defense the Storm put on. More Storm kills and Saints' errors gave the Storm a strong lead of 21-13 going into the end of the set. The Saints attempted a comeback with a three point serving run, but three kills from Matthews secured Lake Erie's second win of the season, with a match winning set score of 25-21. 

Olah finished the match with six kills, Leyden with 15 assists, and Hiser with 13 digs. 

The Storm returns to action on Tuesday, September 6th against the Notre Dame Falcons on the road.
