Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Storm women's volleyball team took on the Walsh Cavaliers for another conference match, taking one set. The Cavaliers took the next three sets, securing the match to bring them to a 6-6 record, and the Storm move to a 2-12 record.
The Storm started off the first set with a kill from senior Dora Olah. Senior Jordan Taylor kept it going with two more kills. The Storm grew an early lead of 8-4, continued with kills from Olah, freshman Jessica Ickes, and senior Maria Blatnik, and senior Kariema Rodriguez-Diaz. The Storm furthered their lead to 14-9, answered with a kill from the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers tried to come back with some kills and Storm errors, but the Storm kept their strong offense going with more kills and service aces from Rodriguez-Diaz and Taylor. Junior Caitlin Farkas recorded a pair of service aces to give the Storm the first set, 25-20.
The Storm and Cavaliers battled throughout the second set. Olah put down more kills for the Storm, before the Cavaliers took a lead at 7-5. Blatnik and Taylor kept the Storm in it with more kills, but the Cavaliers recorded kills of their own to keep the lead at 17-13. Ickes put the ball down to give the Storm some power, followed by kills from Blatnik, Rodriguez-Diaz, and Taylor. The Cavaliers matched the Storms offense with more kills, along with Storm errors to give them the second set 25-22.
With the sets tied 1-1, the third set was a competition to pull ahead. Sophomore setter Simone Schurr got the ball rolling with a service ace to start the set. The Storm and Cavaliers battled to a tied score of 5-5, followed by a kill from Blatnik and a short run from Taylor to give them a lead of 12-7. The Cavaliers answered with a five point run to tie it up 12-12. The score remained tight going into the end, with another tied score at 22-22. Rodriguez-Diaz put away another kill to make it 23-22, answered with a kill from the Cavaliers. 23-23, Blatnik scored. Another kill from the Cavaliers made it 24-24, followed by a kill from Olah. With the Storm up by one, two Storm errors gave the Cavaliers a lead of 26-25. Olah tied it up with a kill at 26-26, but the Cavaliers put away two straight kills to give them the third set 28-26.
The Cavaliers were up 2-1 in sets going into the fourth set. Olah put away three kills along with a solo block from Ickes to start, before the Cavaliers went on a long run to give them a lead of 13-4. Cavalier errors gave the Storm some momentum, but the Cavaliers continued to go on runs to bring it to 24-8, match point Cavaliers. The Storm fought on with kills from Taylor and Olah, but the Cavaliers ended the set with a kill, finishing at 25-12 to take the match.
Olah finished the match with a season high of 18 kills. Schurr also achieved a season high of 33 assists. Sophomore libero Brooklyn Broadway picked up her season high of 28 digs.
The Storm take a short break before their next conference match on the road against the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers, Friday, September 30th at 7:00 PM.
