Box Score LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The Lake Erie women's volleyball team lost their first match of the Lock Haven Invitational against the Glenville State Pioneers. The Storm took the first set 25-19, then lost the next three 25-20, 26-24, and 27-25. This brings the Storm's record to 0-4-0, and the Pioneers to 5-2-0.
Storm senior right side hitter Dora Olah returned to the court in this match putting down 14 kills. Senior outside hitter Kariema Rodriguez-Diaz followed with 12 kills in the match. Sophomore setter Simone Schurr recorded 20 assists, and sophomore setter Sarah Leyden recorded 14 assists. Senior defensive specialist and libero Kaylee Hiser picked up 16 digs, and senior outside hitter Jordan Taylor was close behind with 13 digs.
The Storm have made a strong start in each of their matches this season, taking the first set in their first four games. The Storm and the Pioneers were a good matchup to start off, with the Storm taking the first lead 4-3. Olah appeared in her first game of the season, starting off strong with five kills early in the first set. The Storm furthered their lead after two runs from Hiser and Leyden to make the score 10-6. The Pioneers combatted their lead with a few kills and LEC errors, but the Storm kept up with kills from Olah, Rodriguez-Diaz, and Jordan. The set ended in a Pioneer attack error, securing the first set for the Storm, 25-19.
The second set had kills and errors from both teams, keeping a close tied score. The Pioneers took the lead after a three point run giving them the lead at 13-10. The Storm fought back with kills from freshman middle hitter Jessica Ickes, junior middle hitter Anna Lewis, and junior outside and middle hitter Alexandra Matthews. Storm's junior defensive specialist and libero Caitlin Farkas subbed in and went on a three point run of her own, bringing them to only a one point deficit at 17-16, Pioneers. The Pioneers responded with a five point run, followed by some Storm errors to give the Pioneers the second set, 25-20.
The third set started competitively, before the Storm took over and gained a solid lead of 14-7. They kept the momentum going with a service ace from Schurr and kills from Matthews, Jordan, and Olah. The set took a turn at 21-14, when the Pioneers went on a five point run to make it 21-18, Storm. A Pioneer service error ended the run, but the Pioneers went on another run short after to tie it up at 22-22. The nail-biting set continued with another Pioneer service error and kill from Storm's Matthews to bring the set to game point, 24-23, Storm. Three Storm errors and a Pioneer kill ended up giving the Pioneers the set, at 26-24.
The Storm kept fighting throughout the fourth set, with back and forth kills and errors to bring the set to 10-10. Kills from Olah, Rodriguez-Diaz, and Taylor kept the Storm in the game with another tie at 19-19. More errors and kills from both teams caused another tied score at 24-24. Taylor put down the ball to bring the Storm to game point at 25-24. The Pioneers responded with a kill of their own, followed by a Storm error and a Pioneer service ace, giving the Pioneers the match winning set, 27-25.
The Storm take on Lock Haven University for their next match of the invitational on September 3rd at 1:00 PM.
