Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Storm volleyball team hosted another conference match against the Cedarville Yellow Jackets, taking the first set, but dropping the next three. The Storm now have a 2-16 record, and the Yellow Jackets move to a 10-9 record.
The Storm and the Yellow Jackets were well matched going into the first set. The score remained tight, with three kills from senior Maria Blatnik to start the offense off for the Storm. The Storm were up by one at 10-9, with senior Jordan Taylor recording a kill for the Storm, followed by senior Dora Olah's first kill of the night. The Storm had a nice 14-11 lead in the middle of the set. Freshman Jessica Ickes returned to the court, putting away her first kill of the night for the Storm. The Storm went on a three point run with sophomore Brooklyn Broadway at the service line to grow a 18-14 lead. The Yellow Jackets fought back with some kills, but the Storm kept on. Taylor went on a five point run to finish up the match, 25-17, ending with a service ace.
The Storm were up one set going into the second. The score continued to stay close, with ties at 2-2, 3-3, 9-9, and 11-11. The Yellow Jackets went on a run to grow a lead at 16-11, ended by a kill from junior Katelyn McMoore. Taylor recorded another service ace to give the Storm some energy. The Yellow Jackets stayed consistent, and took the set 25-16 from kills and Storm errors.
The sets were now tied 1-1 going into the third set. Sophomore Simone Schurr started the Storm off with a three point run. Another kill from Taylor and a Yellow Jacket error kept the Storm in it, but the Yellow Jackets went on a six point run to grow a 8-5 lead. The Storm tied it back up with a pair of kills from McMoore and Olah, along with a block from Ickes. The score stayed close at 8-8, with more ties at 12-12, 16-16, 17-17, and 20-20. The Yellow Jackets put away two kills to take a 22-20 lead, stopped by a kill from Olah. The Storm fought hard, but the Yellow Jackets took the third set 25-21 from two kills and a Storm error.
The fourth set started with another kill from Taylor, followed by a pair of kills from junior Alexandra Matthews. The score was tied 8-8 before the Yellow Jackets went on an eight point run to grow a 16-8 lead. The run was stopped by a kill from McMoore and a kill from Matthews. The Yellow Jackets responded with a kill, but the Storm had an answer. McMoore went on a short run led by a kill from Olah to bring the Storm back at 14-18. The Yellow Jackets held their lead, but an error mixed with a kill from Ickes brought the Storm back. Senior Kaylee Hiser went on another run for the Storm to bring them to a one point deficit at 19-20. A Yellow Jacket error and a pair of kills from Blatnik kept the Storm fighting, but the Yellow Jackets took the match winning set 25-22 after kills and Storm errors.
Schurr tallied 22 assists for the night, with sophomore setter Sarah Leyden close behind at 14 assists. Olah led the Storm in kills, putting down 12, followed by Blatnik with 10. Blatnik also marked two solo blocks. Taylor picked up 19 digs, and Broadway picked up 18, leading the team defensively.
The Storm look to their next match at the Midwest Region Crossover in Hammond, Indiana on Friday, October 14th.
