Box Score PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — The Storm women's volleyball team traveled to Ursuline College to take on the Arrows for another GMAC match. The Storm challenged the Arrows in five sets after dropping the first two, brining it to a close 17-17 tie in the fifth set. The Storm could not hold off the Arrows, and lost in five. The Storm bring their record to 2-20, and the Arrows move to a 3-20 record.
The first set started with some Arrow kills, but junior Schylar Shepard quickly answered with a Storm kill. Senior Jordan Taylor then recorded a service ace to stay competitive with the Arrows. Both teams fought hard, with senior Maria Blatnik putting away her first kill of the night to tie it up at 6-6. The Storm went on a short run led by senior Taylor Metzler to give them a lead of 11-6. Storm freshman Jessica Ickes recorded a solo block and Taylor put down a kill to keep the Storm in action. Arrows responded with a run to bring them back at a tie score of 14-14. Senior Dora Olah put down a kill along with another ace from Taylor, but the Arrows responded right back. The score was tied multiple times at 18-18, 20-20, 22-22, 23-23. Blatnik and Ickes fought the Arrows with a solid block, but the Arrows took the set after a three point run, 26-24.
The Arrows started the second set with another three point run, ended by a Storm kill from Taylor. The Storm continued to fight, but the Arrows grew a 16-5 lead. Junior Alexandra Matthews, Blatnik, and Olah tried to keep the Storm alive with some kills, but the Arrows took the second set 25-17.
The third set started off with a service ace from sophomore Simone Schurr. The set stayed competitive, until the Arrows put away some kills mixed with Storm errors to grow a 14-8 lead. Taylor answered with a kill, followed by an Arrow and an ace from Schurr bring the Storm back at 12-14, down by two. The Storm and Arrows battled, as Ickes put away three kills to give the Storm an 18-17 lead. Ickes' kills kickstarted a run from sophomore Sarah Leyden, to continue the Storms momentum at a 20-17 lead. The Arrows had an answer, and tied it back up after a kill and some errors from the Storm. At 20-20, the Storm went on a five point run started by a kill from Ickes and then led by senior Kaylee Hiser to give the Storm a 25-20 win.
With the Arrows up 2-1 in sets, the Storm had to fight. Shepard put away a kill to start off the set. Both sides stayed tight with an early tie at 4-4, before kills from Blatnik and Matthews along with an Arrow error gave the Storm a 7-4 lead. The Arrows came back to tie it up, as the set stayed competitive. At 18-18, Olah put down a kill, followed by an Arrow kill. Kills and errors from both sides brought the score to a 25-25 tie. An Arrow error gave the Storm set point at 26-25, but the Arrows came back with a kill to bring it to another tied score. Matthews slammed the ball to give the Storm another chance at taking the set, 27-26. Matthews kept it going with a service ace to give the Storm the fourth set.
Starting off the forced fifth set, Shepard put down a kill. Another kill from Olah, a block from Ickes and Olah, and Arrow errors gave the Storm a 6-3 lead. Hiser kept it going with two service aces to further the Storm's lead. The Arrows tried to come back, but the Storm held their lead at 12-9. Matthews put away another kill, which the Arrows matched. Another Storm kill from Olah gave the Storm match point at 14-13. The Arrows put down a kill, making it 14-14 win by two. Both sides fought for the match winning point, continuing to 17-17. The Storm did what they could, but the Arrows put down back to back kills to take the set winning match, 19-17.
Olah led the Storm in offense with 13 kills. Schurr had 21 assists for the Storm, and Metzler picked up 13 digs.
The Storm continue their conference road play on Friday, October 21st, taking on the Hillsdale Chargers at 6:00 PM.
