Box Score The Lake Erie College men's soccer program took the field in NCAA tournament play with an afternoon contest with the Tigers of Fort Hays State in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Storm fell in a overtime heartbreaker by a score of 3-2.
The Storm got off to their characteristic quick start with a goal from Daniel Utgaard with a quick goal in the 10th minute of the game. Utgaard would prove to be the star of the first half with a second goal in the 38th minute off of a Tomas Fernandez assist. They would take the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
Fort Hays State was able to respond with a quick goal in the second half to bring the score to 2-1. The Storm backline held strong, but the Tiger attack was able to put a second goal into the back of the net just moments before the final whistle. With the score now tied, the game would push into the overtime period. Unfortunately for the Storm, the Tigers converted on a late goal in the second overtime period, and the game would come to a 3-2 end score. Senior goalkeeper Tom John had a valiant effort in goal despite the loss as he added another 5 saves to his career totals.
This heartbreaking loss concludes an otherwise historic season for the Storm as they earned both the regular season and postseason Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships. Ayden Von Essen earned Offensive Player of the Year alongside Teddy Baker who earned freshman of the year honors for the conference. Head Coach Louie Rolko also won his second Great Midwest Athletic Conference coach of the year honors of his Lake Erie tenure.
