Box Score The Lake Erie men's soccer program took the long trip this week down to Owensboro, Kentucky to face off with the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan, and they were able to pull away with a strong 2-0 victory.
The game began closely contested defensively with neither team finding many scoring opportunities in the first half. The deadlock would bring both teams into the half with a 0-0 tie.
However, in the second half, the Storm offensive attack really kicked it into high gear. They took a total of 21 shots in the game, with 12 coming in the second half. With all those scoring chances, there is little question who would come up with a goal to break the deadlock. Reigning conference offensive player of the week Ayden Von Essen was able to find the back of the net in the 83rd minute of the game on an assist from Connor Mautino. Shortly thereafter, senior Tom Pearson would add a goal of his own. He was assisted by Von Essen and Teddy Baker on the play in the 86th minute. The 2-0 advantage would prove too much for the Panthers to overcome that late in the match. The Storm would come away with a win, a defensive clean sheet, and retention of their top spot in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference standings.
On the defensive side of the match, the Storm backline led by defender Ben Wiemann was able to keep the Panthers scoring chances to a minimum by allowing just 6 shots in the game. Additionally, freshman goalkeeper Tomas Wroblewski was able to add 2 more saves to the impressive start of his young collegiate career at Lake Erie.
This win sets the stage for a great road matchup on Saturday, October 28th for the Storm men's soccer program. The Storm head to Cedarville for a 1 pm kickoff that could prove decisive for the regular season conference title, and the coveted ability to host the Great Midwest Men's Soccer Conference Championship at home.
