Box Score (WILSON, N.C.) – A masterful Mitch Sorensen (R-Jr., Westlake, Ohio/Avon) and a powerful top half of the lineup helped Lake Erie even up the season with an 11-1 victory over Saint Rose at Fleming Stadium on Sunday. Sorensen mowed down the Golden Knights with 11 strikeouts while the Storm's one through five batters combined for eight of the team's 11 hits and nine RBI's.
The scoring came fast and furious as Lake Erie (2-2-1) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two frames thanks to a six-spot in the second. Nathan Birtley (Jr., Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) highlighted the second with a two-run home run that also scored Scott Fernald (Jr., San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis). Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Sam Browning (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) cleared them all with a double to plate Trace Peterson (Jr., Brunswick, Ohio / Medina), Reed Collins (Jr., Farmington, Minn. / Farmington), and Corbin Paxton (Sr., Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania-Northview).
While the six runs definitely provided a cushion, Sorensen only needed the two in the first. His first strike out didn't come until the second inning, but the Golden Knights quickly went down fast with three punch outs of the swinging-and-miss variety.
Sorensen went on to have multiple strikeouts in the fourth and sixth innings as well. The only run scored against him came in the seventh inning on a sac fly. Overall he allowed just six hits in the complete game.
Birtley, Paxton, Collins, and Brady Minetti (Sr., McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) all had multiple-hit games to lead the offense. Collins, Peterson, Browning, and Minetti all had extra-base hits in addition to Birtley's round trip. Paxton, Collins, Peterson, and Fernald all scored twice for the Storm as well.
The Storm are now off until Saturday when they will take on local rival Notre Dame for a twin bill. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Spranger Stadium in Avon.
