Storm Score Late Goals To Defeat Malone

Box Score

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) - The No. 9 Lake Erie men's soccer team remained undefeated in a match up against Malone, with a 5-1 victory on Wednesday night.

In the first meeting between the Storm and Pioneers, it took a heroic goal by Jonathon Carr in double overtime for the Storm to prevail. In the second matchup it looked like it would again take another overtime goal for either team to win.

Both teams were unable to counter each others defense in the first half. The first half finished with both teams only taking two shots a piece. A slight momentum shift favored the Storm in the 36th minute when the Malone goalkeeper Alexandre Durand aggressively came out of the box and collided with the Storm offensive player. Durand was handed a red card forcing Malone to play with ten the rest of the match.

Lake Erie did not take advantage of Malone being down a player until the 80th minute when Ameer Saade was able to dribble pass his defender and played a beautiful cross to Jonathan Carr. Carr did not miss his opportunity to score by putting a ball in the far post past the goalkeeper.

The Storm continued to apply pressure late in the game, as Carr was able to find the back of the net again in the 84th minute on a rebound from a shot that he took that was deflected by the backup goalkeeper.

After the second goal by Carr the Storm kept their foot on the gas pedal and began scoring in bunches. Less than a minute after gaining a 2-0 lead Ayden Von Essen placed his name on the score sheet with a perfectly placed goal on an assist by Carr. Before the Pioneers could get setup defensively the Storm was able to get on another break that turned into a connection by Tom Pearson to Von Essen who scored his sixth goal of the season and the second of the night.

Nathan McFeaters scored the only goal for the Pioneers with two minutes to play in the match. Sander Van der Sluijs netted a goal with a minute left in regulation that pushed the Storm lead to 5-1.

Tom John finished the game with one save, as Lake Erie outshot Malone 16-5. Saade and Carr now both lead the team with four assists. Von Essen's two goal performance now leads the team with six goals followed by Carr with five goals.

The No. 9 Storm will look to continue the undefeated streak on the road against Walsh on Sunday afternoon. The matchup between the Storm and Cavaliers will kick off at 3:00 p.m.
