Storm Falls Short In Overtime Heartbreaker to Tiffin

Box Score

(TIFFIN, Ohio) – Jubilation quickly turned to heartbreak as No. 5 Lake Erie fell in its upset bid of No. 1 Tiffin 3-2 in overtime at Heidelberg's Hoernemann Stadium. The Storm (9-6-4) took a 2-0 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game before the nationally-ranked No. 22 Dragons (14-4) sent it to an extra period with a pair of goals 2:04 apart.

A trio of G-MAC All-Conference selections helped give Lake Erie the lead with the first goal scored in the 20th minute when Tiffin was carded for a foul inside the box to provide the Storm with a penalty kick. Javier Borreguero went just left of middle while the Dragon goalie guessed the opposite direction for the 1-0 advantage.

It was his 11th goal of the season and put him in a tie with Miquel Espinoza for the second-most goals in the G-MAC until Espinoza made the score 2-0 just after the start of the second half. He received the assist from Ezekiel Ebenezer and chipped the ball over the Tiffin keeper's head at 53:59.

The score remained so until the 80th minute when Leo Hasenstab lined a shot in from around 20 yards out to put the Dragons on the board. Andrew Nmah added the equalizer on a break in front of the goal a couple of minutes later. In overtime, Kangni Gabianou dove in on a corner kick for a header that found the back of the net for the win.

Pressure was on the Lake Erie defense for the majority of the game as Tiffin outshot the storm 20-6. Of those seven were on target compared to the Storm's four. Corners also favored the Dragons by an 8-0 count.

Lake Erie's season now ends while Tiffin advances to Saturday's championship against either Ohio Valley or Cedarville.
