Storm Sweeps Lake Superior State, 3-0

PAINESVILLE, Ohio-The Lake Erie College volleyball team completed their fourth sweep of the 2016 season with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-18) win over the visiting Lake Superior State University Lakers on Friday (Oct. 7).

Lake Erie improved to 11-6 overall on the year with the second straight win, along with a 4-3 mark in the conference.

The Storm jumped out to a fast start in the first set as the Storm opened a 9-2 lead before a Lake Superior timeout. With a 12-6 lead, Lake Erie went on an 11-1 run to put the set out of reach en route to a 25-8 set one win.

The Lakers and the Storm exchanged points before the Lakers took a 10-7 lead in the second set. With the Storm down 12-11, Lake Erie took a 9-0 run for a 20-12 lead. The Storm went on to win the middle set 25-15.

In the third set, Lake Superior State opened a 3-1 lead before the Storm came back to tie the set at four. Lake Erie took a short lead until the Lakers rallied to tie and extend the lead to 11-9. A service error tied the game at 12. Lake Erie forced a Lakers timeout with a 5-0 run. With a six point lead, Lake Erie ended the match with two emphatic kills and a 25-18 set three triumphs.

Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) led the way with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) joined Peiffer with double digit kills (ten) and a .500 hitting percentage. Lombardo also had four block assists.

On defense, Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) finished with eight digs. Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) had seven digs and 31 assists. Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) also made four block assists.

Lake Erie will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 8) with a GLIAC conference matchup with the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals. The match is set to begin at 2:00 PM.
