Top-Ranked Lakers Dash Storm's Hopes of Second Straight Upset

Box Score

ERIE, PA. – Top-ranked and defending national champion Mercyhurst University jumped out to a 9-1 lead midway through the second quarter en route to a 16-7 victory over the Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team in East Coast Conference action Wednesday (April 11) at Tullio Field in Erie.

Brady Heseltine scored five goals, including three straight during a 6-0) run, to lead the Lakers (9-0, 7-0 ECC) to their 16th straight win dating back to last season.

Mercyhurst led 3-0 in the first before sophomore Trevor Tarte (Amherstburg, Ont./Kiski Prep) got the Storm (3-5, 1-4 ECC) on the board with 4:31 left in the opening period.  The Lakers got one more in the period and then opened the second with five straight goals to take that 9-1 lead.  Tarte scored again to halt the streak and junior Matthew Curcio (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) found the net just before the horn to make it 9-3 at halftime.

But the Lakers quickly dashed any hopes of a second-half comeback by the Storm with five goals in the third that made it 14-3 and essentially put the game away.

Tarte added two goals in the second half to finish with a team-leading four goals. It was his second four-goal game in the last three and gives him a team-leading 17 on the year. He was the only Lake Erie player with more than one goal.

In addition to Heseltine, Brian Scheetz and Kyle Kallay each scored twice for Mercyhurst.  Michael Grace made nine saves in 38 minutes in net.

The Storm is on the road this weekend, playing at Dominican College (N.Y.) on Saturday, April 14, at 11:30 a.m.
