Lake Erie men's soccer (0-2) could not find the back of the net
in its home debut as it fell to Urbana University (1-0),
2-0, in Painesville, Ohio. The game marked the first soccer
match played on the ProGrass Mondoturf surface at Jack Britt
Memorial Stadium.
Both teams had scoring chances in the first 45 minutes but
neither was able to crack through on the scoreboard. While
Urbana controlled the time of possession in the half, the Storm
backline, led by senior Justin
Mihaly (Lowellville, Ohio/Ursuline), limited the quality of the
Blue Knights' chances.
Urbana struck just 53 seconds into the second half as Stuart
Brown split the middle of the Lake Erie defense and found Henrique
Guitti who capitalized from ten yards out. Playing in a swirling
wind, Lake Erie struggled to create opportunities as the Blue
Knights controlled the pace of play. Those Urbana chances
eventually led to an insurance goal in the 81st minute
as Rowan Taylor found the net from 15 yards out, unassisted.
In goal for Lake Erie, sophomore Ricky
Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) made
seven saves.
Urbana held a 20-9 advantage in shots and won the battle of
corner kicks, 7-4.
The Storm are in action next on Wednesday, Sept. 8 when they
host Ashland University at 4:30 p.m. in the second half of a men's
and women's doubleheader.
