Lake Erie men's soccer (0-1) fell behind early and could not
catch up in a 3-1 loss to Wheeling Jesuit University
(1-0) in Wheeling, W. Va.
The Cardinals struck first in the 15th minute when
Victor Picchio scored on a penality. Wheeling Jesuit extended
its lead to 2-0 at 34:43 as Philip Mshelbwala found the back of the
net and that was the advantage at halftime.
A red card late in the first half left the Storm shorthanded,
but Lake Erie cut the deficit in half at 52:55 when junior defender
Kyle
Roesch (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) scored off a corner kick by
junior forward Marco Gaudio
(Cambridge, England/Impington Village College) in his first game as
a member of the Storm. The Cardinals added a insurance goal
from Dominic Welsh in the 78th minute for the final 3-1
margin.
In goal for Lake Erie, sophomore Ricky
Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) made three
saves.
Wheeling Jesuit held an 11-10 advantage in shots while Lake Erie
won the battle of corner kicks, 5-4.
The Storm are in action next on Sunday, Sept. 5 when they host
Urbana University at 2:00 p.m. in Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
