Box Score Lake Erie College (2-7, 0-7 GLIAC) scored its first two goals in
GLIAC play against the league's leader and top defensive team, but
it was not enough in a 4-2 loss to #21-ranked Northern Michigan
University (6-0-3, 6-0-1 GLIAC) at Jack Britt Stadium in
Painesville, Ohio. The Wildcats had allowed just two goals to
conference teams in six matches entering this contest.
The Storm did not look intimidated facing the ranked Wildcats
and showed positive signs as they played even with them in
the final 80 minutes.
Northern Michigan got on the board just 3:24 into the game as
Amelia Johnson found the net from 25 yards out. They extend
their lead in the 10th minute on a breakaway goal by
Dana Stephens after a nice pass ahead from Missy Mohr.
After those first 10 minutes the Storm settled in and eventually
cut the deficit in half at 19:45 when freshman Ally Miller
(Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) scored her first collegiate goal from 15
yards out via a pass from freshman Robin Hames
(Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby). The score stayed at 2-1 until late
in the first period when Johnson scored her second goal of the day
to give the Wildcats a 3-1 advantage.
After 18 shots between the teams in the first half, the pace of
play slowed as neither team attempted a shot in the first 16
minutes. Stephens eventually added her second goal of the
game in the 65th minute, as she connected on the second
shot of the breakaway after freshman Megan
Baldacci (Cavecreek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) saved the first.
Freshman Misty Porter
(Reno, Nev./North Valleys) was a hard working force for the Storm
all afternoon and it paid off with her first collegiate goal with
39 seconds to play as the assist came from Miller.
Baldacci (Cavecreek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) made double-digit
saves for the fourth straight game as she stopped 10 Wildcat shots
and squelched several other scoring opportunities.
Northern Michigan held a 27-8 advantage in shots and 4-1 lead in
corner kicks.
The Storm are in action next on Sunday when they face GLIAC foe
Michigan Tech at Jack Britt Stadium in a noon kickoff.
