Box Score PAINESVILLE, OHIO - After making a pair of
saves in the first 45 minutes of action, Lake Erie senior Chelsea Giesen (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley) shifted to the front of the
Storm's lineup after halftime. The move worked as Giesen
headed a ball into the net in the 99th minute to give
the Lake Erie women's soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory over Point
Park University tonight (Sept. 4) at LaRoche College in Pittsburgh,
Pa.
Freshman midfielder Valerie Urbanik (North Ridgeville,
Ohio/North Ridgeville) scored a goal and assisted on Giesen's
winner for the Storm (1-1) which picked up its first win of the
season.
Freshman Jaimie Nelson (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas) took over for
Giesen in goal and made six saves in her first varsity
action. Overall, Lake Erie goalies made eight saves on the
night.
Point Park (0-1) took a 1-0 lead with a goal by Erica Mikolay at
22:11. The score remained that way until Urbanik connected
from 25 yards out to tie the score in the 67th
minute.
The two teams then played scoreless ball for just over 30
minutes before Giesen headed in Urbanik's free kick to set off a
Storm celebration.
Lake Erie outshot Point Park 17-12 in the match, but Point
Park's Liz Velez made 13 saves in goal for the Pioneers.
The Storm returns to that same pitch tomorrow, Sept. 5, when
they play host LaRoche College at 1 p.m.
