Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Walsh University Cavaliers scored with
25 minutes to play to beat the Lake Erie Storm men's soccer team
Wednesday (Sept. 29) at Slattery Field.
The teams played an even first half with Lake Erie handling much of
the possession and out-shooting the Cavaliers, 5-3. In the second
half, though, Walsh was able to gain some momentum and control on a
field that became muddier as the game wore on in between periods of
rain.
Walsh finally capitalized at the 65:00 mark as Ben Traux connected
from about five yards out off a header assist from the end line by
Chad Flath.
The Storm did not have a shot on goal in the second half as Walsh
keeper Nate Rech maintained the clean sheet started by Mike Kelley,
who stopped three shots.
Lake Erie goalkeepers Jared Daly (Hubbard, Ohio/Ursuline) and Ricky Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) had two saves
apiece in a game that featured 39 fouls, but just 17 shots (eight
on target).
The Storm now hit the road for a pair of games against Michigan
GLIAC schools this weekend. Lake Erie will battle Northwood on
Friday (Oct. 2) before taking on Saginaw Valley on Sunday (Oct.
4).
