Storm Suffers Setback in Home Opener

Box Score

PAINESVILLE, OHIO - The Lake Erie College men's soccer team came up just short in its home opener today (Sept. 1), dropping a 1-0 decision to visiting Wheeling Jesuit University at Slattery Field.

The loss was the third straight to start the season for the Storm (0-3) while the Cardinals (1-0-1) notched their first victory on the young season.

After a scoreless first half, Wheeling Jesuit struck in the 62nd minute, with Paul Silverstone connecting off a feed from Chris Wilson.

The Storm appeared to tie the match in the 72nd minute, but a goal by freshman Rob Searles (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) was negated by an offsides call. Two minutes later, senior Justin Rraya (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) was denied on a free kick by Cardinal goalie Shane Young.

Young picked up the shutout, recording three saves. Redshirt freshman Ricky Carriera (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) made two saves in his first career start.

The Storm returns to action on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 5, when it hosts the University of Charleston (W. Va.) at 2 p.m.
