PAINESVILLE, Ohio (September 27, 2008) - Lake Erie College
jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the first quarter after out rushing
the visiting Adrian College Bulldogs by 48 yards, but were unable
to hold on to the lead, losing, 37-17 at Jack Britt Memorial
Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Storm's Kyle Gregory (Avon, Ohio/Avon) plowed past the
Adrian defense on the opening kick, returning the ball for a
program record 52 yards to give Lake Erie excellent field
position at the Adrian 45-yard line. Seven plays later, Lake
Erie was on the board with a Cameron Szatala (Lorain, Ohio/Admiral
King) 37-yard field goal.
The Storm then stopped the Adrian attack on its first series and
regained the ball where it forged ahead 27 yards on six plays
before having to punt. The Bulldogs scored on their next position,
making it 7-3 after a one-yard rush into the end zone followed by
an extra point.
Lake Erie answered in its next series after two Tony Howard
(Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights)rushes for a combined 45
yards, including a 13-yard touchdown run. Szatala's kick through
the uprights put Lake Erie back on top, 14-10 where it ended the
first quarter.
Adrian put up two touchdowns in the second quarter to go ahead
21-10 to end the half.
After the break, Lake Erie capitalized on Bulldog penalties -
four in all that amounted to 58 yards - and totaled 89 yards in six
plays. Freshman quarterback Sean Bedevelsky (Brunswick,
Ohio/Brunswick) threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Gray
(Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland South), making it into the record books
for long reception and long pass. Szatala's extra point brought the
Storm within four, 21-17, with 7:05 to go in the third period.
Adrian scored its fourth TD of the day in the third quarter,
then added another touchdown and a field goal in the fourth to
finish the game.
Bedevelsky concluded the day 13-for-19 for a total of 205
yards. Gray was the Storm's leading receiver with 131 yards and
five receptions. Howard totaled 85 yards on 11 carries. Bill
Finucan (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) was again on top for the
defense with eight total tackles.
Lake Erie (0-5) remains at home on Oct. 4 to host Glenville
State at 1 p.m.
