Storm Drop Contest to Falcons

PAINESVILLE-The Lake Erie College Storm women's soccer team nearly pulled out their first win of the season on Tuesday, and they were hoping to carry that momentum over into their contest with the visiting Notre Dame Falcons on Thursday afternoon.

That plan came to a screeching halt as the Falcons posted five first half goals en route to a 10-0 victory over Lake Erie. With the loss, the Storm fall to 0-7 on the year, while Notre Dame ups their record to 5-4.

The Storm were never able to get the offense on track as they were outshot 31-0 in the contest. Notre Dame benefited from a deeper bench that helped in a somewhat hot and humid afternoon as the Storm were without a sub for most of the contest.

The Falcons opened the scoring when midfielder Erica Gaskins knocked home an unassisted goal in the fourth minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Teammate Kati McBreaty scored the next two goals off assists from Stephanie Epple and Leslea Chopka at the 17 and 28 minute marks to give the Falcons a 3-0 cushion. McBreaty finished off her hat trick at the 78th minute, which gave Notre Dame a 9-0 advantage.

Rachael Tharp added two goals for the Falcons at the 33rd and 42 minutes, which gave Notre Dame a 5-0 lead at the half. For Lake Erie, they were unable to hold off the offensive pressure in the second half as well as Notre Dame opened the scoring with a goal from Dawn Grove at the 47th minute to up the advantage to 6-0. Epple, Margaret Lolka, and Chopka capped the scoring for the Falcons in the game.

Storm keeper Jane Roberts made 11 saves in 90 minutes of action while Amy Ott was untested in the Falcon net as she went 90 minutes without a save. The Storm will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they will host Bluffton College in a non-conference affair beginning at 1:00 p.m.
