Lady Mavericks Slide Past Storm

PAINESVILLE-Sometimes its not how much you have, but how much you make of what you got.

For the Lake Erie College Storm women's soccer team, they looked primed to grab their first win of the season, but it was the visiting Medaille College Lady Mavericks who squeaked out a 2-1 victory in non-conference action. With the loss, the Storm dip to 0-6 on the year, while Medaille ups their mark to 2-1 on the season.

The Storm outshot the Lady Mavericks by a 12-8 margin, but Medaille cashed in on their opportunities as junior defender Lynn Buehlmann scored the game winner off a Stacy Young assist at the 80-minute mark to seal the win. Storm midfielder Mandi Stachon created two chances inside the five-minute mark that looked to be game-tying goals.

The first opportunity for Stachon came when she dribbled past a Lady Maverick defender inside the box, but her shot was deflected by Medaille keeper Megan Valentine. The second scoring chance came with less than a minute to play when Storm midfielder Keri Cameron (Mentor) delivered a cross that Stachon headed just over the cross bar and fell helplessly behind the net.

Lake Erie trailed 1-0 at the half as senior forward Sarah Normile began the scoring with a goal off a Jamie Gregorio feed at the 22 minute mark to give the Lady Mavericks the early lead. The Storm answered back in the second half when Cameron took a Stachon pass and delivered an arching 23-yard shot that sailed over Valentine's head to tie the game at 1-1 with about 39 minutes left in the game.

The two teams looked like they could be heading for overtime, but Buehlmann's goal ended that talk and gave Medaille the victory. For Storm keeper Jane Roberts, it was a pretty quiet evening as she made three saves in five opportunities, while Valentine grabbed five saves out of six chances.

Lake Erie will be back in action on Thursday afternoon when they will host Notre Dame College (OH) for a non-conference affair beginning at 4:00 p.m.
